Common Questions about Canes and Walking Sticks

How do I measure myself for correct walking cane length?

Standing erect with both arms relaxed at your sides and wearing the shoes that you normally wear MEASURE from the floor at the outer side of the heel to your mid wrist (just before wrist bone, or second skin crease of inner wrist). Normally we can custom cut to the 1/2".

At proper cane length, your shoulders should be even with each other. If you have an existing cane, look in the mirror with cane in place. If the shoulder of arm holding cane is higher than the other, your existing cane is too long. If this shoulder falls lower than the other, your existing cane is too short. Elbow flexion of about 25 degree angle, when in use. Cane length is "usually about" one half the cane user's height, in inches, wearing shoes. Example: Height (with shoes) = six feet = 72 inches Half of 72 inches = 36" cane length source

Ideally, if requiring a walking cane as a mobility aid, consult a Physical Therapist to determine the proper cane length. Otherwise, please carefully follow the proceeding guidelines to determine the proper cane length…It is strongly recommended that you have someone assist you when measuring for the proper cane length of your walking cane for the first time. How do I measure for a cane tip replacement. Does it fit over existing tip or should it replace the old tip?

You would replace the tip. The best way is to take off the current tip and measure the insert hole's diameter across and order that size. It should closely match the diameter size of the cane's bottom as well.

What is the difference between a regular handle and a petite handle?

The petite handles are a bit more diminutive for smaller hands. Whereas a standard size cane handle is approximately 5-6" long and 1" wide, a petite may run 3.5"-5" long and 1/2" wide (depending on cane, of course).

Rollators & Walkers

How do I measure myself and/or adjust the height correctly for a new Rollator?

  1. Stand behind the rollator with your arms and hands hanging at your sides and both feet in line with the rear wheels.
  2. Adjust the height of the walker handles so that they are even with your hip joint. When you stand straight and grip the handles, your arms should be slightly bent at your elbows (approx 20 to 30 degrees).
  3. Keep in mind this is a "general measurement" since there are all kinds of users.
  4. Most rollators have a 4"-6" handle adjustment. Junior Rollators work well for users 4" 8" up to 5'2" and have a 250lb-300lb weight capacity. Standard Adult-size rollators work for 5'3" up to 5'11".
  5. Tall Rollators will fit 5'11" - 6'4". Some rollators offer Tall handlebar extensions if needed.
  6. Seat sizes range from 13" to 18" for Standard Adult sizes and up to 22" for heavy-Duty and even wider for Bariatric Rollator.
